Zygomatic And Pterygoid Dental Implants
Dr. Matthews Talks About Your Dental Implant Options
Schedule NowZygomatic Dental Implants Vs. Traditional Implants
For patients that have been told they are not a candidate for dental implants due to severe jawbone loss, zygomatic dental implants are an alternative solution offered by Dr. Barrie Matthews and the professional team at Big Sky Smile Center in Miles City, MT and Sidney, MT. Rather than placing the implant post into the maxillary (jaw) bone, the implant is placed into the zygoma (malar) bone, which forms part of the cheekbone. This is a dense bone structure that, in most instances, provides lifelong support for the implant post with little to no movement over time. Similar to traditional implants, zygomatic dental implants feature three unique parts: the implant post, the abutment and the prosthetic. Titanium zygomatic implants are placed at an angle and are much longer than traditional implants (usually around 50mm) to allow for full extension into the zygomatic bone.
What To Expect During (And After) Surgery
The general process of zygomatic implant placement is similar to that of traditional implant placement. The first step of the process is to come in for an initial consultation; if you have been told by another dentist that you are not a candidate for dental implants, Dr. Matthews will conduct a thorough oral examination to deliver a second opinion. If there is not enough supporting jawbone to accept traditional implants, zygomatic or pterygoid implant placement may be an adequate alternative.
The surgical process itself takes just a few hours, and patients can expect full healing to occur within four to eight months. This will allow sufficient time for the bone to completely fuse with the zygomatic bone, in order to provide decades of secure implant anchorage. We also offer IV Sedation and General Anesthesia services at Big Sky Smile Center, ensuring that your surgery and treatment will be as comfortable and pain-free as possible.
