At Big Sky Smile Center in Williston, ND and Watford City, ND, Dr. Barrie Matthews and his professional team have decades of experience placing full mouth dental implants. Whether you need to replace a single tooth or an entire mouthful of teeth that have succumbed to rot, decay and/or impact trauma , implants involve removing the tooth and its underlying root structures, then replacing them with fixed, permanent implants that look and feel just like your natural teeth. There are three main parts to a fixed dental implant: the titanium implant post, the abutment and the prosthetic (replacement tooth).
Which Type Of Implant Treatment Is Right For You?
Common types of dental implants include single implants, full-mouth dental implants for All-On-X with Teeth-In-A-Day, implant supported bridges, and implant supported dentures. The type of implant you receive will depend on several factors, including the presence of healthy jawbone and the overall state of your oral health. During surgical placement, the entire tooth and root structure are removed. Next, a titanium implant post is placed below the gum line and drilled into the jawbone; after several months, the post permanently fuses with the bone, providing a durable anchor that can deliver decades of daily use with little to no movement or slippage. In order to determine which type of implant procedure is right for you, Dr. Matthews will need to conduct a full mouth oral examination during your initial consultation.

What To Expect During An Implant Procedure
As mentioned above, the first step of any dental implant procedure is to come in for an initial consultation. Dr. Matthews will need to review your oral health records and conduct a thorough oral examination, during which he will determine your overall candidacy for implants. If you are deemed eligible for implant surgery, the next step after consultation will be to come in for the surgical procedure. Surgical placement of the titanium implant posts is achievable in a single visit to our office in either Watford City, ND or Williston, ND, at which time you will receive a temporary dental prosthesis (temporary replacement teeth). After several weeks of healing, your final prosthesis (permanent teeth) will be placed.
Dental Implants And Jawbone Recession
Compared to traditional dentures, one of the biggest advantages of fixed dental implants is that implants do not produce excessive wear and tear on the jawbone. Removable dentures are prone to moving and slipping over time, which produces friction on the gums and leads to pain, inflammation and accelerated jawbone loss. Jawbone loss can result in a wealth of oral health complications, including severe pain and discomfort, as well as the loss of support from facial bone structures (which over time could result in the jaw shifting upward). Fixed dental implants, on the other hand, are securely fused into the actual jaw, meaning they will not move or slip over time. In fact, implants help to maintain the structure of the jawbone, and as they reverse bone loss, implants actually contribute to improving the state of one’s complete oral health and wellness!

Is Implant Surgery Painful?
One of the most common questions we get when it comes to implant surgery is whether or not the procedure itself is painful. The straightforward answer is that implant surgery requires surgical placement of one or more titanium posts into live bone mass, which can sometimes feel slightly unpleasant. Fortunately, Dr. Matthews and our team at Big Sky Smile Center offer a full range of IV Sedation and General Anesthesia services, meaning you’re unlikely to feel a thing over the entirety of your procedure. In fact, you may fall asleep during the procedure and not even remember having your surgery done at all!
